Martin Trimmer a Prussian born immigrant owned and operated the American Hotel on the South side of the Plaza in Old Town San Diego. A July 7th, 1869 newspaper advertisement for the Hotel's Restaurant proclaimed: "Our table is always supplied with the best the market affords" It's our restaurant's promise as well.Juana Trimmer was Martin's wife, and our restaurant's namesake. She no doubt enjoyed serving home cooked meals on the patio just as we do today. This site was their home between 1872 to 1874.Foods during this period were a combination of many different cultures, influences, and ingredients. Olives, Citrus, and Figs were introduced by the Spanish Missionaries, corn, beans, and chiles, came from Juana's native Mexico, sausages, potatoes, and mustards were brought by from Europe, and hearty stews and grilled meats were cooked at the California Ranchos.Although Juana's kitchen has been updated with the times, our restaurant invites you to celebrate the rich culinary diversity of San Diego in the mid 1800's Experience Old Town San Diego's living history, and to enjoy the tastes of "Original California Cuisine".
